child high-fiving therapistMental health therapy for adolescents and teens is often much more challenging than it is for adults simply because the adolescent is probably not a willing participant in the beginning. At Beyond Healthcare, our holistic approach allows us to anticipate and plan for resistance in our learners. Motivational enhancement therapy (MET) is one of the clinical tools we use to elicit self-directed and self-motivated changes in their behaviors, especially for those who are in recovery from substance abuse.

At its core, MET is a method of engaging and fostering self-esteem in adolescents and teens so that they will become more engaged with behavioral change and commit to substance abuse therapy.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy Is Not a Linear Path Through the Steps of Recovery

Although it is used for changes in behavior generally with adolescents and teens, MET shows its most compelling results with teens addicted to alcohol, nicotine, or marijuana. Teens in this category are usually not swayed by arguments about their health, the effect that addiction has on their family, or the ability to make good social connections.

Instead, MET is an adolescent-centered approach that helps learners look at their behavior and symptoms objectively while developing a keen sense of their internal motivations and how they interact. These are some of the motivational principles that a therapist using MET will employ:

  • Empathy — The therapist creates a caring and inclusive environment that lacks judgment, argument, or confrontation. They listen to your teen and use reflective listening to restate what is said, with carefully chosen changes that encourage more discussion and deeper analysis by the learner.
  • Discrepancy — The therapist draws attention to the learner’s stated goals for who they want to be and how they are living now. This leads toward identifying curing behaviors that are roadblocks to future goals.
  • Demonstrating self-efficacy — Any evidence that the adolescent or teen is capable of agency and change is quickly built upon by the therapist, which is translated into the change they must initiate to conquer their current problems.

Beyond Healthcare is dedicated to highly personalized treatment options for our learners and their entire families. Often MET will be paired with other therapeutic tools, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), or other behavioral modification programs.

Adolescent and Family Community Support

We have developed a specialized program called Community Connections, which brings together families, professionals, and Beyond Healthcare alumni. In this group, Beyond Healthcare families get together to discuss struggles and celebrate successes. Adolescents and teens will always need so much more than just therapy, and that is why we want your family to have the best opportunities to learn and grow.
