What does the ACEs assessment measure?
An ACEs screening measures the number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which include early experiences of abuse, neglect, and trauma among people before they turn 18 years old. Approximately half of all children in the U.S. have experienced at least 1 ACEs. Exposure to ACEs has been consistently associated with mental health struggles in adulthood, such as:
- Substance abuse
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Suicide attempts
When environmental demands do not align with a person’s coping skills, the result is stress. While experiencing stress is a normal part of childhood, being exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) without therapeutic assistance causes a prolonged activation of biochemical stress responses that causes permanent changes in brain chemistry. Without the opportunity to work through these issues in a therapeutic environment, these changes extend beyond childhood. They impact the way we respond to conflicts, communicate with others, perform at work, and discipline our children. At Beyond Healthcare, we are committed to helping parents confront and deal with their own adverse childhood experiences in order to help their children.
